BNSF RAILWAY
IN WASHINGTON

DELIVERING THE GOODS

From the food on your table, to the car in your driveway and the television on your wall, just about everything you use once rode on our rails. And thousands of local passengers ride our rails on Amtrak and Sound Transit trains every day. We’re proud to connect this region’s farmers, manufacturers, and businesses to customers across the country and around the globe. In 2018, BNSF carried:
  • 1,870,794 carloadings in Washington
  • Enough lumber to build more than 500,000 homes
  • Enough grain to provide 900 million people with a year’s supply of bread
  • 348,893 units of consumer products from Washington

INCREASING EFFICIENCY FOR A CLEANER ENVIRONMENT

BNSF is proud to be an industry leader in protecting the environment. Our fleet of locomotives is already one of the newest and cleanest-burning in North America, and we continue to upgrade with new and more efficient engines and other fuel efficient technologies.

  • A single BNSF intermodal train can move as much as 280 semi-trucks, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75%
  • BNSF has cut average locomotive particulate matter emissions by nearly 50% in the last ten years
  • One BNSF train can move one ton of freight nearly 500 miles on a single gallon of diesel
  • In the last ten years, we’ve replaced close to 40% of our fleet with more energy efficient locomotives

EVERYTHING WE DO STARTS WITH SAFETY

Freight rail is already the safest mode of ground transportation, and we’re always working to improve it. We continue to invest across our network to make the transportation of crude oil and other hazardous materials even safer.
  • BNSF has completed installation of all mandated Positive Train Control (PTC) infrastructure on our network, with more than $2 billion invested in PTC implementation
  • $3.57 billion planned investment in technology, infrastructure, and equipment in 2019
  • More than 6,800 first responders trained in 2019
  • BNSF invests an average of $140 million annually on grade-crossing maintenance, improvements, and safety programs

INSPECTING OUR TRACKS AND BRIDGES

BNSF is committed to the safe operation of every single mile of our network. Our track inspections include on-site visual inspections, and we utilize state-of-the-art technology to help identify defects or problem areas undetectable by the human eye.
  • 650+ inspectors visually inspect more than 10 million miles of track every year
  • More than $1 billion devoted to rail bridge capital investments since 2006
  • 4,000+ trackside detectors deployed across the BNSF Railway network
  • Approximately 300,000 miles of tracks annually tested by autonomous geometry cars
