The latest BNSF Railway information and resources for communities of
the Pacific Northwest.
DECEMBER 2015

At BNSF Railway, we know our successes, innovation, and commitment to safety are linked to thousands of people in the Pacific Northwest. Before heading into the new year, we thank everyone who contributed to and strengthened BNSF’s legacy of industry leadership.

We celebrate all that BNSF has been able to accomplish and wish you a happy new year!

A record year for sustainability

Railroads are by far the most efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. The newly released BNSF 2014 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report confirms this and shows BNSF leading the industry in innovation and safety.

  • Customers that shipped with BNSF helped save 32 million metric tons of emissions – or the equivalent to removing the resultant emissions of 6.5 million automobiles in a year.
  • 600 new energy efficient locomotives were added to BNSF’s fleet, making it the newest and cleanest burning fleet in the industry.
  • In the last decade, BNSF cut carbon dioxide emissions nearly 14 percent. BNSF also recycled over a million pounds of batteries, 6.5 million gallons of lube oil, and 2.7 million railroad ties.

BNSF takes accident prevention, preparation seriously

By Jared Wootton, General Manager, Northwest Division, BNSF

Freight rail is the backbone of the Northwest economy, and for well over a century, Burlington Northern Santa Fe has proudly and safely brought goods to and from Washington. We move the things we use every day – from the food we eat to the clothes we wear to the construction materials used to build our homes.

Safety is the foundation for our business and our operations. Nothing – absolutely nothing – is more important than operating safely through the communities we serve and the safety of our people. The heart of our safety program is our three-pronged approach: prevention, mitigation and response. Prevention is key as we believe that every accident is preventable. We are continuously investing in new technologies, our infrastructure and resources to reduce risk, making our railroad safer and more efficient.
