Stay Safe – Stay off the Tracks

At BNSF Railway, we’re proud to have one of the lowest-grade crossing collision rates in the industry. And we’re committed to working with the communities we serve to make grade crossing even safer.

About every 3 hours, a person or vehicle is hit by a train.

Stay off railroad bridges. Most bridges do not have safe walkways for people, so if a train is approaching the only options are to jump or be struck by the train.

Never try to walk through a railroad tunnel. There is only about 14 inches of clearance between a passing train and the walls.

Stay at least 10 feet away from tracks. Trains are wider than their tracks, so always keep a safe distance.

At average speed, it can take a mile or more for a freight train to stop.

Only cross railroad tracks at designated crossing areas. Crossing tracks anywhere else is dangerous and illegal.

Stop, look both ways, and listen before crossing. Limit distractions such as phones, loud music, and conversation.

Never disregard gates, signs, or lights. If a crossing does not have signals posted, it doesn’t mean that the tracks are not in use.

An average freight train is about 4,000 times heavier than your car.

Do not pass other vehicles near a crossing. Your view of the tracks may be obstructed or your speed may be too great to stop.

Avoid Stalls. Many crossings are on raised surfaces, so shift gears ahead of or after the crossing to avoid getting stuck on the tracks.

If your vehicle is stuck on a crossing, get out quickly and move away at a 45 degree angle. Call 911 or the listed emergency number.
