
When fire destroyed a 120‑year‑old bridge on the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad earlier this summer, BNSF’s Kasie Howland didn’t hesitate to step in. The general director of line maintenance, who calls herself a “bridge nerd,” volunteered her time and expertise to help the nonprofit railroad plan its next steps.
The April 30th fire consumed nearly 400 feet of wooden trestle, which halted plans for future freight service while leaving only charred timber and hanging rail behind. Howland has been advising the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad team on how to safely dismantle the remains, prepare for demolition, and navigate permits while the organization continues to raise funds to rebuild.
“This is a nonprofit that’s trying to keep an old railroad alive,” she said of her commitment. “When you see another railroader struggling, you just want to help.
