BNSF moves record grain volume to the PNW
Nothing we do at BNSF is more important than helping businesses move products safely to their customers. In Washington and Oregon, those shipments support NW flour mills, dairy, poultry and beef industries. By helping farmers and producers access new and multiple markets than locally available, we are helping rural communities expand their presence.
BNSF moved a record amount of agricultural shipments in 2016, driven in large part because of PNW exports. The primary products are corn, wheat, soybeans and soybean meal, sorghum, peas, lentils, and DDG (distillers’ dry grain from ethanol production). BNSF terminated more than 300,000 railcars of Ag products in Washington and Oregon. PNW ports loaded about 30 percent of all the wheat, corn and soybeans exported from the United States last year.
Our customers have made huge investments along our network, creating jobs and spurring economic activity. 2016 resulted in nearly $3.5 billion worth of investments in the areas we serve by the customers we serve. And the traffic we move reduces wear and tear on roads, bridges, and highways.
Products primarily originated in Washington, Montana, North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Kansas with major destinations in China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, India, Viet Nam, Chile and Thailand.

BNSF proud to team up with Make-A-Wish Oregon
Make-A-Wish® Oregon, which also serves Clark County, Wash., grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Many children and their families describe the wish experience as a turning point in their fight against a life-threatening medical condition.
The BNSF Railway Foundation worked with Make-A-Wish Oregon to help grant the wish of Adam from Clark County, who has been battling a digestive disease. Adam got to go on a trip of a lifetime to Hawaii. Besides soaking up the Maui sun, Adam went deep sea fishing near Lahaina and enjoyed a snorkeling tour near Maalaea. More importantly, he and his family got a chance to spend time together.
This year, BNSF Railway Foundation partnered with Make-A-Wish and granted the wish of Megan who is also from Clark County. The wish covered the cost of a service dog through a certified training agency and travel for Megan and her mom to attend tr aining. Her mom noted, “I was worried I was ‘losing’ Megan due to the fact that Megan wouldn’t leave the house or come out of her room. With the dog, the way she came out of her shell and came to life was unimaginable.” Her service dog, McCoy, comes with her to school and to medical appointments and is a constant source of unconditional love and support. The service dog is instrumental to Megan in helping her gain independence as she grows.

BNSF Railway Foundation in the community
- The BNSF Railway Foundation is providing a $50,000 grant over two years to the Port of Pasco to help with the new children’s play area at the Tri-Cities Airport. The new play area is part of the airport’s new terminal expansion project.
- Donated funds for the Pierce County Library System’s “On the Road with Summer Reading Program.”
- Provided a grant for the purchase and installation of a Hillside Slide to the Skagit Rosewood Preschool and Resource Center. Having this slide on the playground provides many new opportunities for the children. The slide is used for special needs therapy such as balance, coordination, grip, and complex physical movements. It also provides an opportunity for peer interaction, turn taking, and social play
