Farmers are experiencing some of the highest crop yields of soybeans, grain and corn this season. Many farmers are even breaking records in their states. If production forecasts hold up, this season’s harvest is expected to exceed national records.
As the largest hauler of agricultural products in the United States, BNSF delivers these products to Pacific Northwest ports where they are exported to countries around the world. Investments in BNSF’s infrastructure have been critical to ensuring that its rail networks are able to move freight safely and efficiently during this abundant harvest season.
Billions of dollars in investments help increase capacity to meet the growing demand for rail service. Last year, on-time performance increased more than 20 percent. The addition of nearly 1,000 new locomotives cut down congestion significantly and reduced the average number of days freight spends in transit.

Preparing first responders in northern Idaho
First responders in northern Idaho recently received a three-day training from BNSF’s hazardous materials team using their Geographic Response Plan (GRP). BNSF teams worked with public agencies in northern Idaho to develop the GRP, which uses geographic information systems (GIS), environmental and economic data, and input from emergency management and first responders.
During the training, local first responders learned about rail equipment, how to contain and control the spread of hazardous materials, and communications procedures in the event of a spill by rail, truck or pipeline.

Salish Sea Expeditions
BNSF is committed to inspiring the next generation of scientists and environmental stewards in the Pacific Northwest. Through a BNSF Railway Foundation grant, nearly 1,400 middle and high school-age students from 26 schools learned about the importance of scientific research in protecting the Puget Sound through Salish Sea Expeditions.
