Weeks of rain and snow caused a rockslide in Washington this February, triggering a slide fence alarm along a main track. Fortunately, BNSF uses nearly 540,000 feet of rockslide detection systems across the network to help protect trains and people. When the system is activated, signals automatically reduce train speeds on both sides of the affected area.

After the alarm was triggered, dispatchers quickly alerted crews, who responded to the site and cleared the boulders within hours, restoring safe passage for trains. We’re proud of the crews who restore safe operations quickly and help protect the network, mile by mile!
