Safety starts with people, and in 2025, BNSF’s Mechanical Division out of Vancouver, Washington, helped deliver the railroad’s best safety year in its 177-year history. This team, along with others across the country, was recognized with Safety Bell Awards, honoring outstanding performance and a shared commitment to looking out for one another every day.
“I’m tremendously proud of these teams for their commitment to keeping each other safe day-in and day-out,” said Chad Sundem, vice president of safety. “They are truly modeling the way in striving to achieve our vision of operating a railroad free of accidents and injuries.”
Safety Bells are brass bells preserved from historic steam locomotives that are awarded annually to teams with top safety performance. These achievements reflect the everyday commitment of railroaders across the network who continue to make safety the foundation of every operation. Thanks to them, we’ve exceeded our 2025 safety target and continue to lead the industry in safety performance.
