Railroads are the most environmentally-friendly mode of surface transportation. Rail significantly reduces highway congestion by taking freight trucks off our highways. Moving freight by rail is more fuel efficient than by truck; BNSF locomotives can move one ton of freight almost 500 miles on just one gallon of diesel fuel.
A single freight train can replace several hundred long-haul trucks. As trucking companies look for ways to reduce their fuel costs, overcome driver shortages and address demand, they increasingly turn to rail. That’s good news for our environment and our roadways.
